Vibrational modes of partly filled wine glasses

چکیده
Time-average holographic interferometry has been employed to study how the vibrational modes of a singing wine glass change when it is filled with a liquid. While the liquid clearly lowers the resonance frequencies, it does not change the vibrational mode structure in a first approximation. A more detailed analysis, however, reveals that the presence of the liquid causes the simultaneous excitation of two orthogonal modes that are well resolved for the empty glass. © 2006 Acoustical Society of America. Does Glass Size and Shape Influence Judgements of the Volume of Wine?
BACKGROUND Judgements of volume may influence the rate of consumption of alcohol and, in turn, the amount consumed. The aim of the current study was to examine the impact of the size and shape of wine glasses on perceptions of wine volume. METHODS Online experiment: Participants (n = 360; recruited via Mechanical Turk) were asked to match the volume of wine in two wine glasses, specifically: ...
متن کاملTibetan singing bowls
We present the results of an experimental investigation of the acoustics and fluid dynamics of Tibetan singing bowls. Their acoustic behaviour is rationalized in terms of the related dynamics of standing bells and wine glasses. Striking or rubbing a fluid-filled bowl excites wall vibrations, and concomitant waves at the fluid surface. Acoustic excitation of the bowl’s natural vibrational modes ...

The effects of particle shape on the vibrational properties of colloidal glasses are studied experimentally. "Ellipsoidal glasses" are created by stretching polystyrene spheres to different aspect ratios and then suspending the resulting ellipsoidal particles in water at a high packing fraction. By measuring displacement correlations between particles, we extract vibrational properties of the c...

Glasses are structurally liquidlike, but mechanically solidlike. Most attempts to understand glasses start from liquid state theory. Here we take the opposite point of view, and use concepts from solid state physics. We determine the vibrational modes of a colloidal glass experimentally, and find soft low-frequency modes that are very different in nature from the usual acoustic vibrations of or...
